SPLENDID NIGHTMARE IN A BLAZING ULTIMATE TRIP

By: Carlo “Carlz” Sangutan

    It was a Friday evening when Richard laid his body down on his bed alone. At exactly twelve midnight, he felt there was someone lying beside him. But he thought that maybe it was just only his imagination because he missed his girlfriend who recently went abroad. A few minutes after, he again felt someone’s touch over his body. He did not mind it since he was very sure that no one was there because he locked the door of his room before he blew the candle and proceeded to bed. Darkness colonized the whole city. He could not see anyone even himself. The sweet touch continued to run over his body until he fell asleep.

    As Richard unsealed his eyes, he still felt tired and suffered pain all over his body. He suddenly remembered that he and his friends were having a little celebration in a club because one of his companions was position-elevated in work. They also got intoxicated and without expecting, moved with the music all night. He then concluded that the pain he felt was from what they had done last night.

    Richard realized that he had dreamt again the same strange dream he always dreamt since the day his girlfriend answered him “Yes”. He wondered why his dream gave him a situation which showed that he missed his girlfriend who went abroad. This was quite mind-puzzling because his girlfriend was not in abroad; instead her whole family was just living near their house. They were just neighbors. They both lived near Katipunan Street in Barangay Labangon.

    Suddenly, a voice was heard coming from the kitchen. It interrupted him to think about the reason why he dreamt the kind of dream that did not perfectly copy the real situation of their relationship with his girlfriend. It was the voice of Aling Anita who is calling her son to come down to have breakfast with her.

    Richard directly came down the stairs and went to their kitchen. As he reached the kitchen, there were already different kinds of food served at the table. Rice, fried egg, tinola and siomai were some of these stuffs with bananas as desserts. He hastily ate his breakfast in just four minutes and thirty-five seconds because he had planned to have some fun in this certain day. He missed his place. Since he spent his time from Mondays to Fridays mostly in his boarding house near his school, he could not make fun with his barkadas in their neighborhood.

    He suddenly thought about his girlfriend whom he loved very much. He never saw her quite a month. This was why he planned to visit her in their house. With this plan, he also remembered one important thing for him, his cellphone, which was kept inside his clothes cabinet. He placed it under his favorite shirts and it had never been used after he decided to stay in his boarding house just to focus on his studies.

    Richard hurriedly went upstairs and got his phone from his cabinet; recharged it and after few minutes, turned it on. He then undoubtedly sent messages to his sweetheart. He sent her inspiring quotes and a message which said, “Hi, dear. How are you? This is Richard.” He waited for a reply in few minutes but nothing entered to his cellphone’s inbox. It made him wonder what happened to his girlfriend. Suddenly, he remembered his dream, a very strange dream. He directly based it from what ancients had said that “dreams represent something in real lives.” Upon conceptualizing what had been said, he thought that his girlfriend might be already destitute of life since in his dream, someone who was invisible touched him when he was on his bed knowing that he was not with his girlfriend. He hurriedly went downstairs and asked his mother if his girlfriend was already dead. Aling Anita said that she did not know what happened to Sarah, her son’s sweetheart, since it was quite three weeks that she had not seen the girl.

    Richard abruptly went outside their house and proceeded to Sarah’s palace. As he reached his girlfriend’s magnificent house, he did not notice anyone in it. The gate was strongly locked. Beside the gate, he stayed in expectation for anyone who would go inside the said house but no one entered until there was a lady who passed by in front of him. He asked her, “Excuse me, Miss. Where are the owners of this house?”  The lady answered, “Ah, they already left that house and transferred to another because they wanted to be near to the municipality. They are now living near Colon Street, just at the back of University of the Visayas. “When did they leave?” asked Richard. The lady said, “They left two weeks ago.” Richard again asked, “How many of them left?” He made to ask the kind of question, to know and be sure that Sarah was still alive. “They were just three,” said the lady. Richard wondered why there were only three of them left instead of four: Sarah, his parents and his brother. He interrogated the lady, “Are you sure? Hadn’t you seen the fourth one?” “Yes, of course. There were only three persons who left that house and locked the gate afterwards. There were only a boy and his parents. I saw it with my observant eyes,” the lady replied. Richard thanked the lady about the information. His mind was again disturbed by his mental conception about what was truly happening to Sarah. In spite of what he imagined about his girlfriend, he planned to have a trip with his barkadas.

    Richard then went back to their house and changed his clothes. He texted his barkadas and invited them to go with him in different places especially in the center of the island. They went to Emall, Metro Gaisano, Ayala, and lastly SM. His friends were really enjoying.

    At SM when they were on the second floor, Richard saw Sarah walking toward a part of the building where dresses were sold. He ran after the girl, wanting to talk to her about their lives and their relationship. Sarah stopped near dresses department and looked for something that would fit to her. This was the time that Richard, chasing breath, tapped the girl’s shoulder and said, “Hi Sarah, long time no see. How are you?” Then Sarah was shocked while saying, “Richard? Is that you? I’m just OK…How about you?” “I’m also OK especially now that I again see you,” said Richard.

    Suddenly, a man from a distant part called Sarah with the use of the sweet word “Babe”. Richard described the man as good-looking, who he thought, at around twenty-five to thirty years old. He at first thought that the man was just only Sarah’s friend but thoughts were battling in his mind that it was not her friend. The word “babe” which was used by the man to call her proved it. The man came near toward them and slowly put his arm on Sarah’s shoulder. Sarah then introduced the said man to Richard and the name of the man was Jericho. She asked Richard for his cell number and also gave her number to him.

    Richard was suddenly called by his barkadas from a distance; interrupting his conversation with Sarah and Jericho, telling him that Aling Anita, his mother, wanted him to go home because it was already five-thirty in the afternoon. He then said goodbye to Sarah as well as to the man.

    As Richard walked towards home together with his barkadas, his mind could not settle upon thinking Sarah. He regretfully asked himself why he did not still communicate with Sarah even through his phone, in order Sarah would not to be in the hands of another man. He never forgave himself. His heart seemed like being crumpled by the so-called destiny. He even thought of ending his existence.

    When he approached home, his barkadas also made their way to their respective sanctuaries. He pushed their door to open it and when he closed it, his phone rang. It was a text message from Sarah. He opened it and it said, “Good eves, can we meet tomorrow at SM? Thanks.” He wondered why Sarah would still like to meet him even if she already had Jericho to meet with.

    In the morning, they both met in the second floor of SM and decided to eat in a restaurant where they could go to have their talk. When they were in a restaurant, Richard frankly asked Sarah there and there; why she still wanted to meet and see him. Sarah briefly answered that she still loved him and wanted to continue their relationship. Richard was shocked, wondering why she loved him even if she already had Jericho. He asked Sarah about Jericho. Sarah, who was laughing, said that she and Jericho were just friends: close friends. They just used to call each other 'babe' to emphasize their friendship.

    Richard, upon hearing those words, happily hugged Sarah. He hugged her tightly that no key could unlock while saying that he still loved her and wanted also to continue their relationship. They now lived happily but suddenly, a shout of different voices was heard. I accidentally opened my eyes and realized that it was such a very satisfying dream. I said 'yes' but what I saw around me were people shouting for help; some were crying and others were praying soulfully. Oh! We were in the bus, I remembered. I saw the driver sweating; trying to stop the vehicle and managing to turn the bus as where the correct direction was. The bus was still in a speed. People around me were still craving for hope.

    Suddenly, a huge truck came towards us from the opposite direction. I tried to see the driver of that truck and just wanted to signal him to stop his truck to avoid collision. Oh, yes! I saw the driver ten meters from our bus. Oh, no! He was drowsing. I managed to say 'I love you, my dear God' and -BOOM-, our bus collided to the huge truck. The shout of the people vanished. The crying was stopped, also with the praying. Without a minute, both our bus and the truck exploded, covering all parts with magnificent flame.

Soundless Beat

Voice! Voice resources...
People produce different voices
Which can be enhanced by instruments
And can really create music pigments.

Music! Improved from the basic...
Humans sing and dance with the music;
Showcasing one’s own talent by skill
All for the success which no one can kill.

Noise! Noises rejoice...
Too much music can cause loud noise;
Noise that may deafen our ears
Will sometimes lead us to shed tears.

Clamor! The cry will continue...
Like the hard rain that pours anew
To grounds where vehicles blow horns
Making creatures crowned with thorns.

Shout! It hurts, you know..?
Crowning of thorns is just for foe;
But hatred is vanished, love stays
Keeping enemies as friends all days.

But beat! Why this heart beats..!
Having her as a friend makes this organ seats;
Great affection should be expressed to someone
And love surely palpitates but can be heard by no one.

Golden Fleece Dives Into the Sea

By: Carlo Sangutan

Once upon a time, there were groups of sea creatures. They lived under water. They lived happily and peacefully. They help each other in searching for food.

One morning, there was a group of men sailing. They wanted to go to the other island. They wanted to sell the Golden Fleece that they brought. The weather suddenly turned bad.

A storm suddenly came. Strong waves collided on their boat. The Golden Fleece fell into the sea.

One shark found the falling fleece. He got it. He brought it to their kingdom. A kingdom where all sharks lived.

They decorated their kingdom with the Golden Fleece. The kingdom now looked very beautiful. Some other creatures like fish were become envious as they looked at the Fleece.

During the night, the group of sharks went to sleep. It gave a chance for the fish to steel the Golden Fleece. A group of fishes stole the Fleece as expected.

One shark was suddenly awakened by the noise of the fishes. He woke the other sharks up. They swam after the fishes to get the Fleece back. But the fishes did not want to give the Fleece back.

The sharks bit some of the fishes. The other fishes hid behind the rocks. They cried upon looking co-fishes killed. They decided to give the fleece back. They gave it back to the sharks.

Moral Lessons

Stealing is bad. It is also against God’s will. “Don’t get things which are not yours” because if you do, you will gain destruction out of peacefulness in your community. There’s a possibility that you will lose your life or else the lives of your loved ones (which is found in the story).

Tearless Memories

I never forget
The memories in the past that I get;
Moments remain in the mindset,
When happiness and sadness have met.

Lola’s store was the first place,
Where I and my cousin got packs of Ace;
Lola suddenly saw us and did a chase,
As we did this for more than two days.

To my cousin’s house, we then went to sing,
To forget what we did to the store of Lola Turing;
One’s turn suddenly led into boxing
Because of the delayed song choosing.

Again, the next day, we were together
With other cousins and went to the river;
Playing tadpoles but here came my father,
I run but slipped and thought my life was over.

Another day, I saw a dog eating something,
That time, I didn’t know what I was thinking;
I planned to throw that something away and bring
Cleanliness but sad to say, the dog, on me, was biting.

I started to study in school one year after,
But being naughty was not yet over;
Cut classes to slide on mountains with laughter,
But punishment from parents then came later.

What a sad yet funny experience
To treasure for future’s good sense;
I’ll share them to make them dense,
And protect them by a strong fence.

If Analysis

Leadership for Betterment

It is true that you must trust yourself that you can make it for the better. You must not trust a person directly but you must trust yourself first since you do not know that the person you trusted is doubt about what he said or did.

Being a humble person is good. We must not make revenge to the person who hates us. It is because if we make revenge towards that person, it can make chaos among people surrounding us. So, we must avoid having revenge to avoid having chaos. We must also have our own principles that we do not easily believe what people had said. We must also not be too proud to ourselves that we brag that we know more than what they know. If that’s what you think that you know more than what they know, it’s not good because they also know other things which you don’t know.

Never losing hope is also a good idea to have. Even we encounter different problems; we must think that we can solve it. If you are down, never lose hope to strive and work hard to improve your life.  In games, if you lose it, try and practice more for the better and time will come that you can win the game.

All these characteristics are needed to be a good leader since leadership needs good values and characteristics. A leader must have these characteristics in order him to be followed by other people. It’s because if you lack of these values, people around you will hesitate to follow and believe you. We all have the capacity to be a good leader. So, we must acquire and have all these characteristics to be what we want, a GOOD LEADER..!

Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard Analysis

Life Has End

We all know that everything in this world will end, either living or non-living things. Human will end their lives in a specific time. Animals and plants too are engaged to end their lives. Even non-living things like buildings, they will end. Some of them crack because of the years or the period they had been built.

We must enjoy life to the fullest but in meaningful ways. It is because we do not know the time when we are going to be engaged to death. We must do all important things we need to do for our better lives. We must remember that we are going to be put in graves when we are dead. We must give our best to all. We must not ignore to help other people because in times of we need help, they will also help us in return.

We must accept opportunities that came to our lives and strive hard for better future. We should face the challenges of life, not just to surrender our lives. All of us must use our time wisely giving our lives a meaning. While we are still living in this world, we must enjoy doing good things for ourselves and for others, and so, we can gain happy moments. We must also be fair to others since we will all reach the time of death. So, we enjoy life to the fullest..!

The Whistle Analysis

Life First Before Pleasure

This text conveys to us that we must think of the importance of life, not thinking all about for fun or pleasure. Like in the story, he bought a thing, a whistle, by all his money without thinking that if he bought a whistle seriously and mindedly, he could buy four whistles. But he used his money to buy for only one since it gives him fun. He is being charmed by the sound of the whistle as another boy created a sound using it. He then realized that this thing can cause many undesirable situations. One of these is the disturbance of all the family since a whistle could produce a loud sound. Another is that he could buy other important things if he never pays all his money for only one whistle.

Based on my experience, I also encountered this kind of situation. There was a time that I accompanied my friends watching a movie and so, I had to pay the cost of one ticket for the said movie. The movie cost one hundred fifty pesos. And that, because of my excitement and decision to be with my friends that time, I spent that much. After watching the movie, I suddenly realized that I spent too much. I learned that if I spent the one hundred fifty pesos for food, I could satisfy my hunger that time and that if I was not accompanying my friends, I could go home early and avoid my mother from scolding me.

Now, I suggest and remind everyone that we must use our money and time in good ways. We must use them meaningfully. We must never use all of them only for fun. We must give parts to some important things in our lives like food for healthy body not just all for fun.

The Gift of the Magi Analysis

Give and Receive

As I’ve read the story “The Gift of the Magi”, I found it slightly funny. It’s because they buy things as gifts for their loved ones but these gifts are just wasted. These are wasted just because the things intended for the gifts are the ones they sold just to buy the gift for each other. They loved each other very much. That’s why they found ways like this.

If I were in the situation, I may feel angry to myself for what is done. It is very disappointing to have this kind of situation especially like them who are said to be very poor. Della sold her hair just to buy a fob for the watch of her husband Jim and Jim sold his watch just to buy a comb as a gift for Della. But it is also funny to have this situation since they strive hard for nothing. It is only my opinion since I haven’t encountered this kind of situation.

For the people who encountered the same situation, they commonly got angry to the person intended for the gift since they thought that it was just a waste of money to buy things for nothing. That is why I learned in this story how life is being set to us by God. There are times that because of our wish to have a certain thing, we cannot think of others how and what he or she wish to give to us. Sometimes, we sold our possessions to buy a gift for our loved ones without thinking that our loved ones have something to give intended for our possessions just to make us happy.

Sonnet 116 Analysis

Time Never Affects True Love

The Sonnet 116 of William Shakespeare states that love is eternal. Love is not only a feeling that lasts for ‘months’ or ‘years’ but a feeling which lasts ‘forever’. This will show that the love is true. It’s only a play of feelings if that’s the case. The poem also conveys that love cannot be changed by time. In other words, if you love and suddenly you decided to stop your relationship or shall we call ‘cooloff’, that love is also not true. He also added that if love is true, it cannot be shaken and destroyed by temptations.

Based on my friend’s experience, not my experience since I haven’t tried to love seriously, once you broke up your relationship with someone, you will never repair it back since this kind of love is not totally true. My friend also said that he must only love a person who will love him truly and who will love him forever. I think what he said is true because if you untruly love a person, he or she might find another person to be loved. Even I haven’t tried yet to love seriously, I still felt what the loving person feels and thinks in a relationship. I also agree with the saying that “LOVE can wait” since love does not matter about time. Even about years, if you love someone, you can wait. And if that’s so, your love for that person is totally true.

“Ah, eh, Janet pala. Ikaw?” sagot ni Janet.
“I’m Marco Arquinas,” tugon ni Marco.

Classes Will Resume Tomorrow”.

I love you! Nagkakulay ang mundo ko nang dahil sa kagandahan mo.”
“Charrrrr....!!!” ani Janet.
“Nagsasabi ako ng totoo, cross my heart, hope to die!!! I really love you, Janet!” sabi ni Marco.
“Pero...” sagot ni Janet.
“Sige na, do you also love me?

May nasabi ba akong mali? May nagawa ba akong masama?” I’m very, very sorry Marc. Sana maintindihan mo...”
“Ang alin?” H’wag kang magbiro Netz,” tanong ni Marco.
“Totoo Marc, sorry talaga.

“Sorry Marc, but I love my parents more than I love you. Ayokong suwayin ang kanilang sinabi sapagkat sila ang nagpalaki sa akin. Sorry talaga,” ni Janet sabay iwan para umuwi.

Naiwan si Marco sa gitna ng bumubuhos na ulan na puno ng galit at puot sa sariling kagagawan. Hindi kasi niya inisip bago ginawa ang isang bagay kaya siya rin ang talo sa huli.....!

Stopping by Woods on Snowy Evening Analysis

Living and Leaving

This poem by Robert Frost is said to be conveying life and death of a person. We all know that life is very important and there are times wherein we never think about it. All we think is happiness. But what about the challenges and problems we encounter in daily lives? These things can never be avoided because as long as we are living in this world, problems are with us.

Based on my experience, I sometimes think to end my life especially when there are problems which for me seem to be difficult to solve. As we all know, problems are given to us by God because we can solve it, not just a chance to end our lives. Suddenly, I think and learn that if I will end my life right away, it is like escaping the challenges of life. That is why I try proving to myself that I can solve and I can surpass these problems. It's because for me, if I will surrender facing those challenges, I can't see the beauty of life and I can't understand the meaning of life. I now know that we still have important things to do to make our life meaningful, even more meaningful.

In the last stanza of the poem, it conveys to us that the persona still has promises to keep or shall we call things to do in life before he will be engaged to death. That's why, maybe he faced the challenges he encountered as he continued living.

Noiseless Disaster

My body existed so unsure,
Thinking life to be too pure;
Hidden in a place quite obscure,
A patient who greatly needs a cure.

Ouch! I got sick! So sick!
People offered to solve a trick;
A habit of eating in every click
Made me feel to be a brick.

Oh! I got well! So well!
What a happiness I could tell;
A joy, little by little, locked in a cell
Made life turn back into hell.

What a deep sense of disgust!
A chance seemed to be a dust;
As an old iron easily get rust
Created new ideas beneath my crust.

Being strong became the main foundation
Of one's mind as for the whole nation;
My confidence aimed to reach perfection,
And caused me to do bad actuation.

Oh no! I passed in a wrong way,
Using my untrained knowledge astray;
How I wish joy and so I pray,
The new love be acquired everyday.

Creatures don't give me some attention,
Nor providing me little appreciation;
'Cause it's too late to have realization,
Now no one has the consideration.

Oh God, my Lord, my greatest master,
How can I break and kill this disaster?
To paint my joy and be a painter,
To share my love and be a love.

Worthless Striving

The leader appointed me to be free,
Managing the whole so that I can see
How to make groups of the same degree,
Giving the best as one, two, and three.

I then refused what had assigned,
For I thought decisions sometimes inclined,
That can make people became blind,
A very difficult task to rewind.

No one had accepted to be the holder,
Making me to be the treasure keeper;
Jewelries were hard to discover,
So with they’re difficult to cover.

Festivity was approaching to be near,
Season of giving gifts became so clear;
Eliminating sorrow and unshedding a tear
Hopefully be happened throughout the year.

I made my duty full of efforts,
Creating a script for our dramatic sports;
Calling thespians of different sorts,
But was like waiting twelve hours in all airports.

So much more when someone interpolated,
That willingness should be imparted;
One decided to quit and shyness be cemented,
My goal then was only in dreams located.

Timeless Image

Seasons change from time to time,
People make things in a different rhyme;
Some aims to reach the tried prime,
But soon almost all involve in crime.

Memories remain inside my mind,
Before and now, moments may bind;
Blood flows and nerves have signed
A contract of knowledge in me to be vined.

I still remember what few had made,
Getting vital things and with others played;
Objects of the same got into trade,
Like ancients before, foreigners came to invade.

There comes another minute of picture,
Changes that greatly cover the nature;
Wellness can be previously seen as a lure,
But soon damage is felt that needs a cure.

We are born to build our own statue,
As modern heroes that’re full of virtue;
Putting best foot forward against an issue
Of difficulty that is really hard to review.

Today’s life supposedly be male and female,
As well as boats include paddling for us to sail;
Now, unfaithfulness comes out from a firm jail,
To manage society and immorality on sale.

One says, Greek Aphrodite is in the air,
Resembling women as great men’s pair;
Around the world I always stare,
But find her beauty absolutely rare.

Tasteless Existence

Wow! Excitement directed me to study,
And never transformed me to be lazy;
I was always prepared and not unready,
Projects and assignments seemed too easy.

Oh, teacher, my knowledgeable teacher,
Have you made me into a lesson giver?
Or can be considered as an education lover
Who learned facts and shared to other?

But what was this I had done?
Creating a fault which no one can run;
I converted myself, no longer a son,
But a man whose hell life had begun.

I’m still studying, not yet have work,
And I’m dwelling here, not in New York;
How can I surely share ‘spoon and fork’
If I, myself, can annually only taste pork?

Oh, my beloved origin, I’m very sorry,
Thy ambition for me is going into scary
For I know you’re now in great worry,
My life has started its unflavored story.

My study continues but is being neglected,
'Cause flavorless life of mine has been reflected;
I wonder how these burdens be lifted
To the apex of success and be accepted.

Priceless Knowledge

Poverty is not a hindrance,
In having education and its importance;
Good and bad things must have balance,
So, be strong and have reliance.

Education is also for poor,
Learning schools should open their door;
Teach them to learn more,
To move forward and across the core.

Books and magazines are some of our sources
Of information which help different courses;
Also these can be the great forces,
To prevent our minds from acquiring lapses.

We should know the importance of literacy,
And should not be considered as fallacy;
It can develop our intimacy
To others and share our competency.

Endless Friendship

At first, I was afraid to make things,
For my mind was tied with strings,
Covered with dark clouds a storm brings,
And nega thoughts that burdened birds’ wings.

I was alone with only one dime,
Not expecting someone’ll approach one time,
It was great as the sun started to climb,
My miserable soul then showed up from slime.

We became close as time passed by,
Doing activities to be try and try,
Giving our best, forever didn’t die,
And swore each other, “Never say goodbye.”

There came an instance of division,
Two groups were needed for the completion
Of aimed goal and for the promotion
Of youths in the very proud nation.

I had worked with my groupmates,
Where I found someone same as my traits;
We became friends without having hates,
Eliminating sorrow yet wanting previous states.

Fate created a way after that activity,
Without showing the owned worst capability;
We were close again just for the totality
That we became three out of great scarcity.

At times, we always headed the whole,
Helping hands made to be our role
For members who had sacrificed their soul,
Just to reach what their parents called “goal”.

Again and again, there was one who came,
Creating us into a whole of fame;
Any kind of success which no one could blame
Had built an assembly with a very unique name.

The thoughts of four ordinary creatures under the sun
Established ideas where reasons could depend upon;
Different views of life were combined in one,
Hoping we will stick to one and never be outrun.

Countless Blessings

Family and all of our friends,
Whose never-ending strength never bends,
Give our lives meaningful blends
Of peace with the hope that never ends.

Our world which happiness surrounds,
Full of memories that a loner astounds,
And builds attention and harmonic sounds,
Combining different stories that a leader founds.

Guidance is there when we’re alone,
With the help of God in every zone,
Believing no one can get into our throne,
Unless all people will have their own phone.

One, two, three, four, and five,
Graces can’t be counted if we survive
Against the tests of life, we can revive
All good memories that we must strive.

Six, seven, eight, nine, and ten,
We wonder the flow of lucks ends, when?
It will, when women learn to hate men,
As a rooster erases his love to a hen.
